Action Through Specialized Teams

Specialized Teams (STs) in the GTA have been formed with the purpose of carrying out specific types of focused work. The STs co-exist with traditional structures such as community and youth groups, networks, and fieldworkers. Here are the active STs in the GTA that would welcome your participation!

New Technologies Team

The team consist of a group of people specializing in or passionate about the effective use of new technologies (web, internet, digital media) in promoting AI's work for human rights. The team maintains the AITO web site, which includes the merchandise catalogue.

Another goal of this team is to meet the increased interest from the public when the "news" focuses on a particular human rights crisis (i.e. Middle East, Darfur, Sudan). Many people want to be immediately directed to work on the crisis in question. The intent of the team is to provide the public with the information of "What's Hot" and how to act.

Toronto Business and Human Rights and Indigenous Rights Team

We meet at the AI Toronto Office, 1992 Yonge Street, 3rd floor but our meeting day changes from month to month so please email us to find exact details.  We are a group of passionate activists in the GTA working to raise awareness about how business affects human rights worldwide, with a specific focus on the impact the Canadian extractive/oil and mining industry has on Indigneous communities in Canada and abroad. We do everything from writing, emailing, approaching MPs, tweeting governments or CEOs, to online letters and petitions, and to taking to the streets to rally, march and educate the public. Meetings include updates on issues we are currently working on, plans for future actions, and occasionally guest speakers with expertise in a particular area.

French Classes on Human Rights!

These French Classes on Human Rights result from the desire of so many Canadians to improve their French or just to practice the language.

The concept is simple: encouraging Canadians to practice their French and becoming at the same time more involved in human rights. The class is not a lecture strictly speaking in the sense that the two moderators ask the attendants to participate actively during the class.

Thanks to a variety of support and materials (quiz, videos, booklets, articles, etc.), the participants can improve all the different aspects of French language: speaking, listening, reading and writing, as each class includes a human rights action related to the subject of the class.

The French Classes on Human Right are also a unique opportunity to discuss and exchange ideas in French about current human rights issues in Canada and around the world and to do so in a relaxed atmosphere.

Participants: any Francophile who has some basic knowledge of French. Francophone people who want to learn about Human Rights are also welcome!

When: every second Thursdays of the month, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm.

Where: AITO office, 1992 Yonge Street, 3rd floor (Davisville station).

Information and registration: Use our handy contact form.
