INFO: Canada is on the cusp of making important changes to the way companies do business overseas. In the next two weeks Jim Carr, the Minister of International Trade Diversification, will decide whether Canada’s new Ombudsperson for Responsible Enterprise will be able to order investigations of abuse allegations and have the power to compel evidence from companies, or whether simply having someone ‘advise’ him is enough. Powerful Canadian companies and their industry associations say that all Canada needs is an advisor to review complaints against them. But human rights defenders and organizations like Amnesty know that this is simply not good enough. Canada needs an Ombudsperson with the legal backing to stand up to companies that don’t want allegations of human rights abuses against them to be investigated. Canada needs to send a strong and clear message to oil, gas, and mining companies that their days of impunity for involvement in human rights abuses are numbered. More details here

ACTION: write a letter to Minister Carr
