From Syria To Hope Screening & Panel: Representation of Refugees in Canada
March 12, 2019, 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
When: Tue, 12 March 2019, 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM EDT
Where: Innis Town Hall, 2 Sussex Avenue, Toronto, ON M5S 1J5
Join us for the world premiere of “From Syria To Hope” followed by a panel discussion about the future of refugees and migration in Canada.
The event will screen “From Syria To Hope”, an official Films With A Cause documentary made in collaboration with York Region Muslims to explore the lives of three Syrian families who came to Canada under the refugee status. Each family lives in the Greater Toronto Area and has a unique story. The individuals featured in the film reflect on their hopes and dreams after having no choice but to leave their homes in war-torn Syria. The film is intended to be an educational tool to combat discrimination and xenophobia. We believe that diverse voices need to be heard in the mainstream media for change to happen.
After the screening will be a panel discussion about the future of global refugees and migration in Canada. The conversation will deal with refugee policies, Islamophobia and the harm of sensationalizing a crisis in the media.
This event is in collaboration with York Region Muslims, the Cinema Studies Student Union, the Good Ideas Fund, Amnesty International U of T, University of Toronto Refugee Alliance, and Borderless U of T. Special guests and panelists will be announced in the coming weeks. We can’t wait to see you there!
