Arts Etobicoke's mission is to engage all people in West Toronto with the arts and artists in their own community. The organization fosters and sustains local arts activities by involving special and diverse audiences, it increases accessibility of the arts for residents of Etobicoke, and it creates broad community awareness of local arts organizations and artists through collaboration with community partners.
Dionne Brand, City of Toronto Poet Laureate, is the author of the poem for Arts Etobicoke's mural. Poet and novelist, she has written nine volumes of poetry and four works of fiction. For her poetry she has received the Governor General's Award for poetry, the Pat Lowther Award and the Trillium Prize, and for her fiction she has received the Toronto Book Award. She is also Professor of English in the School of English and Theatre Studies at The University of Guelph.
Susan Rowe Harrison is the designer of Arts Etobicoke's mural. Her work has been exhibited in public and private collections in North America, Europe and Asia. Her recent installations include Art on the Move (2010), Bookhou (2010), Floorworks / Relative Space (2009), Come Up to My Room (2008) at the Gladstone Hotel (permanent wall installation in lobby), Nuit Blanche/Xpace Gallery (2007), and Alley Jaunt (2006/07). William Lazos is the painter of the wall. A mural painter since 1990, he paints large-scale murals, at times exceeding 4,000 square feet. He has decorated walls in Toronto, Calgary, Montreal and New Brunswick. He is also a photorealist painter, and his artwork has been exhibited in various galleries in Canada, the United States and Europe. PS Group of Companies is providing the wall for Arts Etobicoke's mural on the west side of the building at 4891 Dundas Street West. Pierre Seunik, the principal of PS Group of Companies, is also Chair of The Islington Village Business Improvement Area which sponsors a series of murals in the Islington Ave.-Dundas St. W. area.
