The highly anticipated Article 26 mural “The right to education” can be seen now at 565 Sherbourne Street.

In the words of one of the youth artists that participated in the making of the mural, David Cordingly “ there are so many types of education, being that family, or community or formal institutions and I think  we’ve done a good job of putting together a mural that is  all encompassing and broader than what often people assume formal education is”.

This is a touching example of how Project: Urban Canvas is making a real impact. Below, Marina Nemat, an Iranian writer now living in Canada, shares her thoughts on the Article 13 mural.

"When I was a teenage political prisoner in Iran's Evin Prsion in the 80's, I spent months in solitary confinement: a small cell about five steps long and three steps wide with a small barred window that was far beyond my reach. I paced in my cell, back and forth, faster and faster, as if speed could move the walls further. Freedom is like water in the palms of our hands, and if we take our eyes off it for even a moment, it can drip through our fingers until nothing is left except thirst. In this beautiful poem [Article 13], Dionne Brand reminds us not to take our liberties for granted, because in many parts of the world, people can only dream of the freedoms that we enjoy on a daily basis. Millions of people, for one reason or another, are prisoners of the place they were born. Let's not forget them." – Marina Nemat, author of Prisoner of Tehran and After Tehran.
