Lua Shayenne & Co. in partnership with Amnesty International is proud to present the World premiere of DEPARTURE 00:00, a DANCEWORKS CoWorks Series Event, at the Lower Ossington Theatre October 11 to 14, 2012.
 
DEPARTURE 00:00 is a 60-minute program of contemporary and traditional African dance from Mali and Guinea. Accompanied by live African drumming and music, the presentation features three powerful, moving and exhilarating new works choreographed by Toronto dance artist Lua Shayenne: War Child, based on the story of child soldiers; Landed Immigrant, based on the experience of new immigrants to Canada and African Suite, a trilogy that pays homage to the African continent.
 
Lua Shayenne & Co. presents contemporary and traditional African dance works that explore current subject matters with the aim to be a vehicle for spiritual and social progress. Choreographer and founder, Lua Shayenne draws on the aesthetics and values of traditional African dance and culture to create dance pieces that seek to upset and challenge multiple conventions and stereotypes. Lua Shayenne & Co. promotes community development as well as cross-cultural exchange and collaboration with national and international artists. Since its inception, the company has been gaining recognition by performing in major venues and festivals including Enwave Theatre, Afrofest, Irie Festival, Kuumba, Dusk Dances and more.

Lua Shayenne is a graduate of Randolph Academy for the Performing Arts and the apprentice program at COBA (Collective of Black Artists) and frequently travels to Africa to research and train in traditional and contemporary African dance. She has worked with Kaeja D’dance, Bakari Lindsay, Chester Whitmore, Kevin Ormsby, De-Napoli Clarke, Eleo Pomare and more.
