Love
is a Human Right. "In
countries all over the world, individuals are being targeted
for imprisonment, torture and even murder, simply
on the grounds of their sexual orientation. Gay men, lesbian
women, transvestites, transsexuals – any person who doesn't
adhere to the dictates of what passes for 'normal' sexuality – may
be subject to such persecution at the hands of private individuals
or government agents." --

What
Amnesty International stands for: Amnesty International
(AI) is a worldwide movement of people who campaign for internationally
recognized human rights. AI’s vision is of a world
in which every person enjoys all of the human rights enshrined
in the Universal
Declaration of Human Rights and other international human
rights
standards. In pursuit of this vision, AI’s mission
is to undertake research and action focused on preventing
and
ending
grave abuses of the rights to physical and mental integrity,
freedom of conscience and expression, and freedom from discrimination.
Who
we are: AI-LGBT Group (Toronto) is an Amnesty International
group that is concerned primarily,
though not exclusively,
with LGBT people around the world who suffer violations
of their human
rights. Most of our members are LGBT people, but our group
is open to all.
What
we do: AI-LGBT (Toronto) was formed in 1990, and works
against human-rights abuses directed at sexual minorities and people
living with HIV/AIDS in other countries, ranging from Afghanistan
to Zimbabwe, El Salvador to Saudi Arabia, Turkey to the USA. We
participate in letter-writing meetings, sponsor international speakers,
undertake public awareness events, speak to media and other groups
about our work, and raise funds to support our activities.
AI-LGBT (Toronto) holds meetings once a month to
participate in campaigns protesting human rights abuses. For information on when, where, etc.
